CCP asks Bryce Hughes the questions about his craft

1.What gets you out of bed every day?

Besides the kids… I just love making images. Sometimes I just get what I get time wise and I have to make do. Other (rarer) times I can cut out a chunk of time and spend a day out shooting. But interestingly enough, all of my favourite images have not been ‘forced’ when shooting.. they are just random, right place right time.

2. Who is the photographer/artist that has inspired you the most?

It’s unfair to name just one.. but I am really into the works of portrait photography

Greg Heisler, Frank Ockenfells 3, Nadav Kander & Dan Winters.

3. What current camera are you shooting with?

Digital is Nikon and Fuji. I have a small D-lux Leica, a holga and recently had a mid life crisis and got a Rolleiflex f2.8 which I am yet to have some rolls developed.

4. When you are on a shoot do you play music? What other essential items do you have with you for a successful session?

Good vibes

5. In the digital world how important is the print?

I started with film, so it’s all about the print.. not 1’s and 0’s. The end goal really is a beautiful print to be hung on a wall!

6. B/W - Colour - Analogue - Digital.

Put these words in your order of preference and tell us why.

Digital, because I can chose between b/w and colour and it’s generally cheaper esp when you want to try something new and inevitably fail.

Analogue is last because of price, but I feel it’s the most magic.

7. Have you exhibited your work, and other than the print, how important was the framing process to you?

I haven’t but when I shot landscape a long time ago the framing process is just as important as every other aspect. Even though it can be expensive it's well worth it and makes such a huge impact. I could never understand photographers spending thousands on 'glass' but would then print and hang their pride and joy in an ikea frame where the image keeps slipping out of place.

8. What defines a great image?

It doesn’t have to be too hard - just anything you like. For me I love images I return to again and again and can still find something new.

9. What is your favourite photo? Why?

Any of my late mother and any of my family, for all the obvious reasons.

10. What is the best photography advice you have been given? Tell us by who if you can or want to?

A fair few years ago I got to watch Duane Michaels speak.. I can’t remember what he said word for word, but it was something along the lines of liberation and permission… At times you feel like everything has been done before, so you don’t try it - So what? That's their interpretation, until you do it - it hasn’t been done yet.

11. When you are not taking photos, what are you doing?

Trying to figure out life, be a family man, father and husband.

High Point

I recently got selected to exhibit in HEAD ON photo festivals open division, so that was a surprise.

Low Point

I once worked for a ‘hero’ of mine a long time ago… and it wasn’t at all what I expected. The shoot time vs business time was heavily skewed to business, with only three months shooting per year.
