NEWSLETTER #6 September 2022
You can just start to feel the subtle difference in the air. The warmer days are creeping back with brighter blue skies. Throw in the odd mozzie buzzing about and this means one thing.. our art scenes and exhibitions are ramping up.
Aside from the many hours of creativity that go into making your art there are many hours behind the scenes to make a show happen. One of the toughest parts of that process, that nearly every artist and photographer seems to agree with, is trying to work out how much to sell your work.
There is no hard and fast rule but we’d like to offer an approach to help you kick start to find your solution and pricing.
First we’d like to point out that this approach is for photographers or artists who are making prints to sell of their work as artists exhibiting original works are selling one off original pieces. We’d love to hear from you how you arrive at your selling price if you have any useful theories to share.
Print only
Basically - when you print your work, take the cost of that print and then times that amount by 3, 4 or 5. This figure will represent the value of your work, and you.
If you are just starting out as an exhibiting artist you would probably choose the lower end of this scale but as you move through your career this number should increase.
Once you feel further established, and have collectors interested, your prices will go higher as your star rises, but for the most we hope this simple theory is useful and acknowledges and respects your position no matter your level.
If you frame your work
Framing can be costly but certainly worthy to show off your finished pieces.. but when considering how much to add to your sale value we recommend adding maybe 10 - 15 % of the frame cost. This is because essentially the artwork holds the value, not the frame, though the choice of frame can certainly add value when made beautifully.
Again, we stress that this pricing approach is not a perfect fit for everyone. Galleries and curators may offer varying outcomes when they help work out your prices, but we feel this is probably a good start if you are unsure and need to decide for yourself.
Come in and talk to Iain about your work and pricing if you need help.
And don’t forget to tell us of any shows coming up so we can share the information. Brad Franks is one such customer. Details of his new exhibition appear in our Exhibitions sections further on.

MONTHLY PHOTO COMPETITION
Thanks to everyone who entered the August Monthly Photo Competition.
It was a pleasure to see the efforts in the work submitted for our theme: STILL LIFE
CONGRATULATIONS to the Open winner:

Richard Sydenham - ‘Moment’
All 4 judges loved this one on first sight. A modern take on a classic idea.
Richard supplied a quote to describe his image.
Moment.
As happens sometimes, a moment settled and hovered and remained for much more than a moment. And sound stopped and movement stopped for much, much more than a moment.
John Steinbeck, Of Mice & Men
CONGRATULATIONS to the Student winner: Evan Eager Powers

Evan takes photography classes at school and this arrangement was made in one of his classes.
If you have any family or friends with kids - under the age of 18 - who are keen about photography, we would appreciate it if you let them know about the competition.

Theme and Brief : Through The Window
View the view or view the viewer viewing the view.. so many options!
Looking through a window can be like using a magnifying glass to focus on one thing. The window frame helps define what you see. It’s a great metaphor but can act as an entranceway, or an escape hatch. Of course it’s often a great source of light so how you choose to use that will be as interesting as what you show us.
We want to see what you can see when you look through the window. What story captures your attention?
Try and feature the window in some way, make it obvious that you are looking through a window, or someone else is looking, and you are not just staring at a view or scene.. therein lies the challenge.

Photographs can be newly taken or from your archives.
Please make sure you submit the correct size file and it is named properly too. All details are on our website. Thanks.
Submissions can be uploaded from 1st September
Deadline is 18th September [11:59pm]
Visit our website to enter. https://www.charingcrossphoto.com.au/photo-competition
The winning images will be shown on the CCP website and in our social media.

“I am drawn to historic images of our environs, and love to re-imagine them in colour. When we look at old black and white photos, we can be tricked into believing that life was dull and 'lived in black and white'. But historic times and people were as colourful as we are today, and they lived in full colour. This body of work reminds the viewer that colour has always been present, even "Before Now".
