Newsletter #2 May 2022

Thanks for all the positive responses to our first Newsletter. These were welcome and encouraging. We hope you have enjoyed some downtime during April with Easter and other holidays filling the calendar - with a splash of sunshine showing up at last too. Though don’t hold your breath as La Nino is here to stay for while longer we are told. Being users of light and clear skies, plan ahead! This month we introduce you to our next Featured Photographer, Tony Potts, as well as start of a series to meet our staff, some new, some not. We also share details for our inaugural monthly CCPhoto Competition, the photography Workshops and our ‘Consultation’ service. But before all that we have to mention the special day of this month which is of course Mother’s Day. [8th May] It’s a great time to give mum a print of your work, an image you know she has wanted for ages, or if you have left this a little late you can always contact Iain to chat about our new Gift Vouchers. MONTHLY PHOTO COMPETITION

The inaugural monthly CCPhoto Comp is now officially open to accept your submission. Shoot to a theme supplied every month and win prizes and cash. There is an Open section and one for School Students. [under 18 years old] Check out our website for entry details: https://www.charingcrossphoto.com.au/ Theme and Brief :The Eastern Suburbs of Sydney in Black & White The subject needs to have a sense and flavour of the area where Charing Cross Photo shop is situated, being the Eastern Suburbs. We are looking for a B/W image with big a WOW factor. Something that you would want to hang on your wall. An image that evokes an emotional response, is creative, and will have everyone looking at your photo in our shop front window and say WOW! Photographs can be newly taken or from your archives. Sign up via out website to enter. https://www.charingcrossphoto.com.au/photo-competition Submissions can be uploaded from 1st May to [11pm] of 15th May. Winner Prizes: Open Section $250 [fixed amount] + an extra amount calculated on number of entries per monthly competition submissions fees. Entry fees are pooled and allocated as follows: 50% - to winner 30% - CCP will be donating to a verified charity of the winner’s choice 20% - CCP administration + The winning image will be printed on archival paper, framed and hung in the window at Charing Cross Photo lab/shop in Waverly for the duration of 1 month. [approx. value $250] After this, the winner can take home their framed photo. [size, paper and frame style is at the discretion of CCP] + 1 signed copy of the book - ‘it’s only rock’n’roll but I like it…’ The music photography by Wendy McDougall [value $55 RRP] Student Section $250 [fixed amount] + an extra amount calculated on number of entries per monthly competition submissions fees. PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS The Workshops by Wendy McDougall now have a start date. The first offering is Street Photography - at the Beach. Available on Sunday 8th May at Maroubra Beach. Yes this is Mother’s Day but for those unable to share the day with their mum this might be a good time. More dates to follow if you can’t make this date. DURATION: 3hr session COST: $150 [inc 1 - 18” x 12” print and chat with CCP owner Iain in the lab at Charing Cross] CLASS SIZE: Minimum 3, Maximum 8 EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Basic understanding of photography a plus but not essential Go to the website for all dates & details, and terms & conditions. https://www.charingcrossphoto.com.au/photography-workshop-beach Stay tuned to the website and our social media for new dates to be added.

CONSULTATIONS

We also have One on One Consultations available for anyone who needs guidance with editing, plans for exhibitions, or has specific photographic questions or a project they would like to talk about. Call us to discuss your needs. The Workshops and Consultations will be given by Sydney professional photographer Wendy McDougall. Wendy has exhibited in 19 solo and over 55 group shows since 1984. She has also helped curate many shows and projects for theatre productions and music events.

FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER

Tony Potts. Photographer Tony Potts has been on both sides of the camera, modelling for Helmut Newton, Patrick Demarchelier and Albert Watson amongst others. With the camera, since the 1980’s, he has shot for many publications including Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Cleo and Inside Sport. This experience of Tony's focus these days is to show his fine art photographs at The Lyons Gallery in Sydney, offering limited editions of his past and present work, with a collection of single edition vintage prints on show. CCP are proud to print for Tony. His work hangs in prestigious private collections in both in Australia and the US. He is known particularly for his B&W nudes and his fashion editorial, particularly his Australian work in the 90s and early 2000’s.

STAFF NEWS

James is a new member of the CCP team. He is with us to close the frames and has the joy of seeing your smiling face when you collect your work. James works three days a week so plenty of time to come in and get to know him. When he is not here at CCP you may find him down the front at a music gig, and he also has a good eye for seeing how light falls and effects his world.
